The University of Michigan is the first university partner in a new method for reaching potential licensees of technologies. Called Yet2.com, the on-line trading floor provides a global marketplace for technologies from companies, government agencies, and now universities.

"Spanning all industries and areas of research and development, yet2.com offers companies and individuals the opportunity to conveniently and privately purchase, sell, license and research some of the world's most valuable intellectual assets," according to a press release from yet2.com.

"We are excited about the potential of this new avenue for reaching motivated seekers of our faculty's technology," explains Elaine Brock, director of the Medical School's Technology Transfer & Corporate Research office. "Marketing technologies can be tedious work with a lot of cold calling. This may be a low-cost way to reach those truly interested in our research developments." Brock explains that faculty with developed technology would still disclose it to the technology transfer offices in the usual way.

If yet2.com was determined to be a good method for marketing that technology, then the technology transfer offices would make the necessary arrangements to have it listed on the site.

Other organizations involved in the yet2.com internet marketplace are 3M, Arthur D. Little, Battelle Memorial Institute, Boeing, Delphi Automotive Systems, DuPont, Electric Power Research Institute, Ford, Honeywell, Polaroid, Procter & Gamble, Rockwell, SAIC, Sandia National Laboratories, and TRW. The companies collectively account for nearly 10 percent of global total annual research and development spending.
