Celebrate Invention 2007
at the University of Michigan

Overhead view of people minglingOn October 3, 2007, over 350 University of Michigan inventors, entrepreneurs, and industry, university and community leaders attended the 7th annual Celebrate Invention reception. This annual event is designed to honor the achievements of over 650 U-M inventors who either disclosed a new innovation, had a patent granted, or saw one of their technologies licensed to industry in FY '07.

Highlighting that fiscal year 2007 produced 329 new technology disclosures, the highest yearly total to date, the theme of the program was “329 ways to make life better!” Participants networked with new and old friends and visited eight “Innovation” kiosks that highlighted works of U-M inventors.

Receiving the Amster AwardVice President for Research Steve Forrest and Tech Transfer Executive Director Ken Nisbet both welcomed the participants, and thanked our 650 inventors for 2007 for their inventive contributions and participation. Ken Fischer, the President of UMS, presented the Herbert D. (Ted) Doan Award for Outstanding Leadership in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, named for Ted Doan, a pioneer in Michigan's venture capital and entrepreneurial community, who passed away in 2006.

In the audience as our special guests were Mrs Herbert (Junia) Doan and daughter Alexandra Doan. The award was presented to Herb Amster, founder and chief executive officer of Irwin Magnetic Systems, one of Michigan's premier technology businesses in the mid 80's, employing over 200 people in Ann Arbor, and producing an industry-leading tape backup system used in virtually all personal computers at that time.
